About us
Inspiration
Touba Edmonton Society is a community group in Edmonton made up mostly of people from Senegal, West Africa. It follows the Mouride tradition inspired by Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba, a respected spiritual leader whose message goes beyond culture and religion.
The society promotes values like peace, hard work, togetherness, discipline, and respect for others. Through educational, cultural, and social activities, Touba Edmonton helps connect its members and passes on a rich heritage to future generations.
The Touba Youth of Edmonton Society helps younger people value and keep their culture alive. Through lively community events, traditional clothing, and shared meals, we offer spaces to celebrate cultural values openly. These gatherings teach youth about customs, build pride and belonging, and strengthen ties between generations. This mix of culture and social activities keeps traditions important and alive today.
Touba and its Significance
Location: Central Senegal, in the Diourbel region.
Founded by: Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba in 1887.
Iconical Place: Great Mosque of Touba, one of the largest mosques in Africa, with stunning architecture and multiple minarets.
Historical Significance: By the late 1800s, Senegal had become a cornerstone of French imperial ambitions in West Africa. What began as a series of coastal trading posts in the 17th century evolved into full-scale colonial domination during the 19th century. This period marked a profound transformation in Senegal’s political, economic, and cultural landscape, laying the foundation for its integration into French West Africa (Afrique Occidentale Française) in 1895.
While some local leaders collaborated with the French for political or economic gain, resistance movements persisted. Armed revolts were rare by the late 1800s, but cultural and religious resistance flourished. The Mouride brotherhood and other Islamic movements became centers of anti-colonial sentiment, challenging French authority through education, solidarity, and spiritual autonomy.
it’s in that context that Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba founded Touba as place of Spritual and Cultural resistance.
Touba is now the second largest city in Senegal in terms of demography and economy.
It’s the center of Mouridism, attracting millions of pilgrims annually for the Grand Magal of Touba, commemorating Bamba’s exile to Gabon in 1895.
